Managing DERs

When: Tuesday, Jun 6, 2017 - Thursday, Jun 8, 2017

Where: San Diego, CA

The Clean Coalition is a partner organization for the Managing DERs conference, which will take place on June 6-8, 2017 in San Diego, CA.

Rapid advances in energy technology are challenging traditional utility business models, but also putting a new array of strategies, platforms and solutions in their hands. The need to manage the ever-growing volume and variability of solar at grid edge is being met with a proliferation of new options for shifting and reducing loads, as well as ancillary services like frequency regulations. Mechanisms range from Automated Demand Response, to Virtual Power Plants, to grid-controlled substation and distributed behind-the-meter storage, to microgrids and avant-garde concepts like transactive energy. Dozens of new third party aggregator platforms and business models are arising targeting this segment.

This explosion of options is happening fast, in some cases explicitly driven by policy mandates (New York, California, and Hawaii most notably). Larger investor owned utilities and munis in these states are actively grappling with the new toolkit, but beyond their bounds this is a new territory for utility planners and engineers on the retail/customer/distribution grid side. As solar, and next storage, prices continue to fall, developing skills, and resources for handling the higher variability will become ever more critical.

This event will provide a thorough survey of the gamut of options available now and in development. Top grid consultants from platform third party energy service providers will explain how these novel business models and mechanisms are working today, and how they can best be leveraged going forward. The event will provide a basic grounding for junior staff and executives and planners who are looking at the future resource and business strategy needs of utilities in a time of rapid change. The event will also provide invaluable education for new entrants in the distributed grid segment, for new hires at solar and storage companies, and anyone planning to develop or market new clean energy service products or platforms.
